Zimbabwe War Veterans Call for Mass Protests to Oust Mnangagwa

A group of war veterans continues to push for President Emmerson Mnangagwa to leave office. These former fighters say they still plan massive demonstrations despite police efforts to stop them. Group leader Blessed Geza has gone into hiding after police declared him wanted for allegedly undermining presidential authority and encouraging public violence. The members scattered when authorities began searching for them.

Knox Chivero spoke for the group through a video released Sunday night from an unknown location. He claimed Mnangagwa sent special teams to hunt them down with orders to kill rather than arrest. Chivero explained they would not rush their plans for national protests. He used a Shona saying meaning fast movement does not guarantee arrival at your destination. He promised that instructions about upcoming actions would come from Geza soon.

Chivero described their effort as belonging to all citizens rather than just a few individuals. He emphasized careful planning as essential for success with minimal problems. The spokesman appeared next to a window in a dark room during his video message. He made no comments about where Geza might be hiding from authorities. The veterans accuse Mnangagwa of poor economic management and trying to create a family power structure in Zimbabwe.

They stress they want peaceful change without violence or bloodshed. Chivero compared their approach to military strategy, where the best commanders win without firing weapons. He alleged special units trained in Belarus were looking for them alongside regular police forces. These teams supposedly received instructions to shoot first and later claim resistance to arrest as justification. Their group believes many silent supporters agree with their calls for a leadership change.

Tensions grew after Mnangagwa supporters suggested removing presidential term limits that would let him stay beyond 2028. This proposal created deep divisions within the ruling Zanu PF party. Vice President Constantino Chiwenga and his backers oppose changing these rules. Opposition parties also strongly challenge any extension of presidential terms. Police arrested journalist Blessed Mhlanga last week for allegedly sharing Geza videos. A court denied him bail after charging him with encouraging public violence.
