Zimbabwe will arrest land barons over illegal sales

Village heads quietly slicing up land for cash are about to learn that a traditional title buys nobody immunity. Daniel Garwe, who heads Local Government and Public Works, says land barons, headmen, and anyone greasing bogus land deals get arrested and prosecuted, full stop.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa apparently ordered criminality across every sector to cease immediately, and the ministry insists it's enforcing that without checking whose political connections are attached.

Three moves are live. Barons cop the maximum penalties available. Headmen and village heads who get convicted lose their positions under the Constitution and the Traditional Leaders Act. Joint squads blending police, councils, and the Chiefs Council of Zimbabwe will go hunting for the syndicates behind fake allocations.

Phony housing cooperatives and self-appointed land agents landed on the radar as well, with investigations reportedly ramping up nationwide. Garwe's tip for buyers stays simple. Confirm who genuinely owns the plot, whether any layout got approved, and who holds development rights, all through the local council first, because a shady stand leaves you with zero legal cover and a lighter wallet.
