Zimbabweans Endure Extended Power Outages

Zimbabwe is facing really bad power cuts right now. People's lights stay off for more than a day in some places. This is happening because the country's two main power plants are having trouble making enough electricity.

ZESA says one of its big power plants at Hwange isn't working properly. The other plant at Kariba Dam can't make much power because the water is too low, so many homes and businesses are in the dark.

In some towns, like Chitungwiza, people only got power back late Thursday night. But after just three hours, everything went dark again. Many people in the capital city, Harare, had no power for a whole day on Tuesday.

ZESA's power plants are still producing electricity. Hwange produces 874 megawatts, Kariba produces 124.5 megawatts, and some smaller power plants are helping, too. But people are confused. They say the power cuts seem worse now than when ZESA produced less power in the past.

Many people can't understand why they're having such long blackouts. They wonder why they're sitting without power for 16 hours or more each day, even though ZESA says it's making enough power for half the country and buying extra power from nearby countries.

The power company says it's trying to fix the problems at Hwange. But for now, many people in Zimbabwe are just waiting in the dark for their lights to return.
