Zimbabwes Hidden Catholic Roots Uncovered

Vice President Constantino Chiwenga said at Pope Francis's funeral yesterday that Zimbabwe helped spread Catholicism worldwide, but few know about it. He talked with reporters about the important Catholic history dating back hundreds of years.

The nation stands with the Catholic Church during global conflicts that might lead to a world war. Chiwenga mentioned that Zimbabwe has Catholic ties from the 1500s when a Mutapa prince named Father Diogo joined the church. Another royal son, Father Miguel, served as a priest in India. The vice president claimed Zimbabwe ranks among the top African nations that sent priests abroad.

Many Zimbabwean ancestors became priests, though this history remained hidden until recently. During his Vatican visit, Chiwenga met former US President Joe Biden, supporting the current administration's foreign policy aims. He praised Pope Francis as a humble leader who valued peace over greed. As a Catholic himself, Chiwenga appreciated the special mass held for the pope.
