Wheat made its debut on the Zimbabwe Mercantile Exchange weekly auction floor at an average price of $400 per tonne as farmers begin harvesting the 2025 crop. Producers offered 1,000 tonnes while purchasers demanded half that volume during the inaugural trading session. The price represents a 6.9 percent decline from the previous $430 level due to rising supply as deliveries increase.
The Grain Marketing Board set premium grade wheat at $461.35 per tonne and utility grade at $451.35. Farmers planted 121,449 hectares and expect to harvest more than 600,000 tonnes this season. The government liberalized wheat and barley trading in 2023 through Statutory Instrument 130. Zimbabwe achieved wheat self-sufficiency in 2022 and requires 360,000 tonnes annually to maintain that status.
