ZNA chief Tapfumaneyi admits army bars opposition recruits

Major General Walter Tapfumaneyi has publicly stated that the Zimbabwe National Army excludes supporters of opposition parties from recruitment, giving preference to candidates from families aligned with ZANU-PF. Speaking at the ZNA Masvingo Province Traditional Leaders’ Day at Chief Nhema’s homestead, Maj. Gen. Tapfumaneyi described a vetting process where political affiliation is a key factor in determining eligibility for military service. He argued that the ruling party must rely on individuals whose loyalties are known, dismissing opposition supporters as unsuitable for army roles.

Tapfumaneyi, a former Deputy Director-General of the Central Intelligence Organization and Permanent Secretary, led Forever Associates Zimbabwe during the 2023 elections, where he played a prominent role in election monitoring. His recent statements reinforce the perception of close ties between the military and ZANU-PF. At the same event, Masvingo Provincial Affairs Minister Ezra Chadzamira praised Tapfumaneyi for his contributions to ZANU PF’s 2023 election victory, further highlighting the military’s alignment with the ruling party.
