Zomba Group Donates Mattresses to Bimbi Health Center.
ZOMBA, Malawi—A group of men who grew up in Zomba from the 1970s to the early 2000s has donated 12 mattresses to Bimbi Health Center. The donation aims to improve the living conditions of patients in the postnatal ward.
Charles Mukiwa, a member of the group, handed over the mattresses on Saturday. He said they decided to donate after learning that the health center needed new mattresses.
Benito Manyamba, the Health Center Committee Chairperson, thanked the group for their humane gesture. He hopes other well-wishers will also donate items to improve health service delivery.
The group, Texas Boys, has members in Zomba, other districts, and outside the country. They share memories of their youth in Zomba and discuss social issues on a WhatsApp group. The group contributed K1.2 million to fund the 12 mattresses.
Group Village Head Kumbwani expressed gratitude for the donation. She noted that the health facility still needs many things to serve the area better.
Dalitso Napawa, the Health Center's director, said the facility serves about 26,000 people under four group village heads. He commended the group for donating the mattresses at the right time.
Eight of the PVC-covered mattresses were placed in the postnatal ward. The remaining four were put in the consultation room and general waiting ward.
According to Napawa, Bimbi Health Center lacks medical supplies, equipment, and adequate water sanitation and hygiene facilities. He hopes other well-wishers will help cover these gaps.
The Texas Boys group has 166 members. Last year, their major project was rehabilitating a guardian shelter at Zomba Central Hospital.
