ZRP to deploy breathalysers and speed cameras nationwide

Zimbabwe's police force will introduce breathalyzers and speed detection equipment on major roadways during the upcoming festive period, when collision rates typically surge due to elevated traffic volumes and impaired driving. Transport Minister Felix Mhona confirmed that authorities finalized procurement specifications through collaboration between the Traffic Safety Council and law enforcement agencies to address violations contributing to 94 percent of crashes attributed to human error.

Legal provisions under the Road Traffic Act impose fines reaching level 10, imprisonment up to five years, or combined penalties for motorists exceeding 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood. Commercial vehicle operators face harsher sentences ranging from one to 10 years of incarceration. The Vehicle Inspectorate Department will receive new operational vehicles to strengthen roadside inspections and enforce fitness regulations.

National police spokesperson Paul Nyathi advised drivers to inspect tire conditions, verify windscreen wiper functionality during rainy weather, and repair damaged glass that impairs visibility while avoiding flooded crossings.
