Zulum drops N890bn budget, flyovers to fix Maiduguri traffic

Borno's governor just dropped a massive budget focused on untangling Maiduguri's traffic nightmare. Governor Babagana Umara Zulum submitted an N890.33 billion proposal for 2026 to the state assembly, zeroing in on road projects to fix congestion from the city's rapid growth. He blames the gridlock on urban expansion and people returning after years of insurgency. The planned "Budget of Sustained Recovery and Growth" includes a fifth flyover for the capital at Bulumkutu Jagol. Over N536 billion is for capital projects, with N353 billion for recurrent costs.

A chunk of that cash, about N58.27 billion, goes straight to the Ministry of Works for these construction jobs. Key internal roads like Federal Low-cost Road, Bulumkutu-Ngomari Road, and Gwange Road are slated for rehab. They're even removing the old railway line between Bulumkutu and Kasuwan Shanu to make space for wider roads. The plan also covers fixing major routes out of town to places like Monguno, Dikwa, and Banki. Zulum says all this work should boost business, make travel safer, and finally ease the city's infamous traffic jams.
