Farmers in Omoro hit by prolonged dry spell, crops suffer
Farmers across Omoro district are watching their crops die after a freak dry spell hit when they needed rain the most. Betty Adong from Lakwana sub-county dropped two acres of maize expecting normal weather patterns, but continuous heat through the growing season tanked her yields compared to the previous year. Livestock are wandering around freely because the pasture basically disappeared. Benson Omona got absolutely wrecked on his soybean harvest, pulling just one and a half bags from three acres when he normally gets six. District agricultural officer Ivan Oweka called out farmers for ignoring weather forecasts before planting, and the meteorological authority says heavy rains should hit between April and July for the first season.
Govt accused of neglecting nodding syndrome crisis, families suffer
Northern Uganda communities are calling out the government for basically ignoring Nodding Syndrome while thousands of kids keep getting wrecked by this neurological disorder. Pader District alone recorded over 1,300 patients, with more than half dealing with severe cases that leave families completely broke and struggling. Local leaders pointed out how diseases like COVID got immediate responses, while NS patients have been stuck with expired meds and zero specialized care centers since treatment facilities shut down. The health ministry claims no new cases exist, but medical workers and MPs are pushing back hard on that. District officials say accurate patient counts remain impossible because funding dried up and tracking equipment...
Wadri denies betrayal, defends independent run in Arua race
Kassiano Wadri is pushing back against claims he ditched Bobi Wine by running independently for the Arua Central Division parliamentary seat. Wadri pointed out that People Power was just a pressure group back when he won in 2018, not an actual registered party. He joined ANT after it got official status before NUP even existed, and plenty of politicians from different parties backed his earlier campaign. His 2018 run pulled support from FDC members, DP folks, and even some NRM people. ANT's mayoral candidate, Nezma Ocokoru, backed him up at a rally, saying opposition parties still work together without beef. Local voters apparently care more about individual candidates than strict party loyalty anyway.
Kagame removes Kabarebe from cabinet, shifts to new role
Rwanda's President Paul Kagame yanked Gen James Kabarebe out of his cabinet spot and moved him into an advisory role right before heading to Washington to ink a peace deal with Congo's Tshisekedi. Kabarebe lost his Minister of State for Regional Cooperation gig and got shuffled to Senior Defence and Security Advisor, which keeps him close to the president but off the diplomatic front lines. The 65-year-old general caught US sanctions earlier this year for allegedly running Rwanda's support of the M23 rebel group and profiting from Congolese mineral extraction. Washington claimed he coordinated military backing and revenue generation from eastern Congo's resources, though Kigali denies everything. The reshuffle dropped other...
Kikuube council approves Bunyoro University master plan
Kikuube District Council signed off on Bunyoro University's master plan after the Ministry of Lands presented the layout for the 100-acre campus. Prof. Grace Kyomuhendo Bantebya said the blueprint shows where everything goes, like the senate building, different schools, housing for staff and students, plus utilities and sports areas. Buhimba Town Council also gave it the thumbs up. The plan heads to the Ministry of Education next, which will kick off contractor procurement to actually build the facilities. Mayor Musa Mugisa mentioned the community is hyped for construction to start, and local business owners are getting ready to formalize their operations to service the university. Road upgrades around the campus block are already...
Three suspects killed in Wakiso after security operation
Security forces gunned down three dudes during a joint op in Kaboja A after tracking them from Kasenge while they were apparently tailing some businesswoman. Two got dropped on the spot, and the third one didn't make it to Mulago Hospital. Police found knives, breaking gear, fake pistols, and some sketchy forged documents on the bodies. One guy was carrying a counterfeit police warrant card from 2016 with the name Byaruhanga Moses listed as a Senior Traffic Sergeant, plus a national ID under Kachingwa Moses. The bodies went to Mulago City Mortuary for autopsy, and cops are still piecing together who these guys actually were and what crew they ran with.
Seku urges students to embrace skilling hubs for success
Some government coordinator named Hellen Seku showed up at Ankole University, telling students they need to get with the Presidential Skilling Hubs program because unemployment keeps getting worse. She pitched the whole setup to over 500 people at Kabwohe Gardens, saying Museveni dropped free training programs where even dropouts can learn trades for six months and walk out with startup money plus market connections. Seku mentioned how trainees get housing and food covered while they learn, and the First Lady apparently told government offices to buy furniture from program graduates to help their businesses grow. She hyped up this Graduates Fund launching next year that's supposed to stop young professionals from chasing low-wage gigs...
Museveni orders PDM funds for youth, land not a barrier
Museveni told officials running the Parish Development Model program to quit blocking young people from getting funds just because they don't have land. The president spoke at a Rwampara rally and said project viability matters way more than property ownership, pointing out that youth can rent space to launch businesses. He referenced some guy named Ayesigwa Kenneth from Kanungu who scored a million shillings, rented a spot for a restaurant, and later got into pig farming. The president went off about how 30% of parish money gets reserved for the 18-30 crowd, but local elders keep gatekeeping access with bogus excuses. He showcased other success stories like George Matongo pulling in 21 million shillings monthly from dairy sales and...
Muhoozi inspects L-39 Skyfox, Uganda eyes air force upgrade
Uganda's military boss, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, checked out a Czech-made L-39 Skyfox trainer jet at Entebbe as part of the country's air force upgrade plans. The demo came from Aero Vodochody reps who pitched the plane's dual purpose for teaching pilots and light attack missions. The UPDF wants better training capacity and newer gear to replace old Soviet-era stuff, especially since they're running operations against ADF rebels in Congo. Air Force Commander Lt. Gen. Charles Okidi and other senior officers sat in on the briefing about the turbofan-powered aircraft. Kainerugaba said the force started with zero aircraft back in guerrilla days, but the modernization push goes beyond just buying planes. The military is working on...
