In modern times what makes a relationship last and why is it that some people nowadays are more comfortable to be in open relationships whilst going forward to proclaim they have a strong relationship without marriage in the picture?

It seems like you're missing the point. Nobody said you can't have a great relationship without marriage. However, many people see marriage as a natural goal. The real question is: why wouldn't you want to be engaged or married to someone you love?
Love, respect, and commitment don't need a marriage certificate or what they call a love contract these days.
In other words, you are trying to say getting married is doing bad business?
