100-year-old and toddler safe after Kavango West fire

Fire rescuers saved a 100-year-old woman and a toddler from a burning room at Matende village in Namibia's Kavango West region.

The incident happened around 7 a.m. Wednesday in the Kapako constituency, according to police chief inspector Raimbert Muronga. Mbundu Elina Mukunga, 100, suffered serious burns across her body. Two-year-old Mukuve Aurelia Makena also sustained serious injuries. Both survivors currently receive medical care at Mupini Health Centre. Family members rescued them after noticing strong smoke coming from their bedroom.

Early investigation suggests an electrical short circuit and high voltage from an electricity box probably caused the fire. Police continue to investigate the incident. The family members acted quickly after smelling smoke from the room where both victims slept. Their fast response prevented a potential tragedy despite the serious nature of the injuries.
