Police caught seventeen people from Malawi who came into Zimbabwe without papers last Sunday. The group must stay in jail until April 16 because officials need someone who speaks Chewa to help them talk. The arrest happened after their bus crashed on March 30. When police came to help, they found these passengers had no travel permits. The bus driver ran away, making police think he might have been moving people across borders illegally.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe said the Malawian bus crashed near the 165 km mark on the Harare-Chirundu Road. Foreign citizens often pass through Zimbabwe trying to reach South Africa, where they hope to find jobs and better lives. Many end up stuck in Zimbabwe jails for years, waiting to go back home. Last September, immigration director Respect Gono reported 368 people locked up for crossing borders without permission - 274 waited for trips home, 61 served jail time, and 33 faced court cases.
