50 teens crushed to death as Indonesian school caves in

Rescuers recovered at least 50 bodies from the Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school collapse in Sidoarjo, East Java province, authorities confirmed on Monday. The structure caved in on hundreds of teenage boys last week after construction work exceeded the foundation's capacity. Officials from the disaster mitigation agency stated rescuers cleared 80 percent of the debris by late Sunday, and they expect to complete the search for the 13 remaining victims by Monday's end.

Budi Irawan, a deputy at the disaster mitigation agency, described the incident as the deadliest single-building disaster in Indonesia this year. Search and rescue official Yudhi Bramantyo reported finding five additional body parts, suggesting the toll may reach 54 people. Indonesia's religious affairs ministry data shows roughly 42,000 Islamic boarding schools operate nationwide, but only 50 possess valid building permits.
