7 SA Nationals Snared in Zimbabwe Prison

Zimbabwe holds 66 people at Harare Remand Prison for crossing borders without papers. Seven South Africans join others from Malawi, Burundi and Ethiopia at the facility. Officials keep them locked up for 14 days to check their legal status. The Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission found these migrants during prison visits. They face no criminal charges but stay behind bars under immigration laws.

Jessie Majome leads the human rights group and wants better treatment for migrants. She says Zimbabwe needs special holding centers instead of regular prisons for these cases. The country lacks proper facilities for people caught crossing borders illegally. Majome calls the situation unfair because migrants get treated like criminals without breaking criminal laws. She wants immediate deportation for those who cannot stay legally.

Zimbabwe and South Africa work together to stop illegal border crossings at the Limpopo River. Many people use Zimbabwe as a stopping point before moving to other African countries. Majome says migration affects all of Africa and needs continent-wide solutions. Social media users mock the news because many Zimbabweans live illegally in South Africa. The commission promises to send detainees home or release them after checking their papers.
