SA Nationals Stuck in Zim Jail Nightmare

Zimbabwe holds South African citizens at Harare Remand Prison after they broke immigration rules. Prison officials keep them locked up until deportation back home. Three South African men will face trial for planning armed robbery crimes. Courts already convicted one South African woman for selling dangerous drugs. She received a 10-year prison sentence.

The Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission confirmed six South African men ready for deportation. South Africa's High Commission verified their citizenship status through official channels. Prison guards will not deport a seventh elderly man because he lacks South African citizenship. The diplomatic mission told Zimbabwe authorities about his different nationality status. Officials must handle each case based on proper documentation.

Commission chairperson Jessie Majome visited the prison and found 66 foreign nationals detained there. She expressed concern about treating immigration violators like criminal suspects awaiting trial. These people belong to a special category that deserves different handling procedures. Prison conditions create problems for people who broke immigration laws rather than committed serious crimes. The commission believes authorities should separate immigration cases from criminal matters.
