Achani Boosts Gender Equality With New Business Contracts

Fatuma Achani, Governor of Kwale County, celebrated International Women's Day by awarding Ksh.50 million worth of contracts to 42 different groups, including women, young people, and people with disabilities. Everyone gathered at Kinango Baraza Park for this special occasion. The Governor wants to speed up equal chances for all, which perfectly matches this year's main message.

Since becoming Governor in August 2022, Achani has been pushing women's groups to become official. She asks them to register as limited companies instead of staying informal. This change lets these groups do business with both government offices and private companies. More than 200 women's groups have already switched to this company setup. Half of these newly formed businesses have already won work contracts from Kwale County.

Governor Achani talked to thousands of people during the event about why strong women matter. She explained how supporting women helps stop violence against them and makes entire communities better off. The Governor said clearly that when you help women grow stronger, everybody around them benefits. She asked all women and young people to keep forming companies because this brings them money they control themselves.

Other leaders agreed with her message during their speeches. Deputy Governor Chirema Kombo and Women Representative Fatuma Masito told the crowd that Achani shows exactly how to stand up for women's rights. They pushed women to run for political jobs during upcoming elections. The county needs more female leaders because not enough women hold these important positions yet.

Meswalehe Abdallah spoke as someone who received help through these programs. She belongs to the Kudzecha group and felt happy about how much their lives improved. She thanked the Governor because her group always receives payment right away after finishing their assigned work. This quick payment system makes a real difference for the women of Kwale County.

Many local businesses benefited from these contracts, including Yawezekana Ventures, Chongomundu Suppliers, Sambamba Malungoni, and several others. These groups will handle different jobs, such as cleaning services across towns such as Diani, Lunga Lunga, Kwale Town, and Kinango. Some groups received building and construction projects throughout the county. The money from these jobs goes directly back into local communities.

Many important people showed up to watch this big moment. The audience included County Secretary Sylvia Chidodo and various executive committee members. Chief officers, directors, court magistrates, and representatives from the national government all attended. Various partner organizations also sent people to witness the contract ceremony and show their support for the program.
