A public advocate wants Americans to arrest Ghana's former finance minister if they see him. Rodaline Imoru Ayarna told Ghanaians living in the United States to make a citizen's arrest of Ken Ofori-Atta. The former minister faces corruption charges from Ghana's Special Prosecutor office. Officials want him back to answer questions about the National Cathedral project and the SML scandal. Police have asked Interpol to issue a red notice for his arrest.
Ofori-Atta reportedly had prostate cancer surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota on June 13. The Special Prosecutor says he went to America for medical treatment. Ayarna spoke on TV3's New Day show Thursday and said Ghanaians should not feel sorry for accused officials. She believes people who hurt the country should face justice. The advocate thinks citizens abroad should help bring him back to Ghana.
Ayarna criticized how some leaders profit from government borrowing. She said these officials benefit from loans but regular taxpayers must pay the money back. The advocate called this unfair to ordinary Ghanaians. She wants people to act if they spot the former minister anywhere in public. Ayarna said citizens should arrest him at restaurants, shops or any location they find him.
