Afonja quits PDP over snubs, vows new path

A former infrastructure chief in Oyo State has abandoned the Peoples Democratic Party after what he describes as systematic neglect despite bankrolling campaigns and protecting ballot boxes during multiple election cycles. Prof. Abdul-Rahman Raphael Afonja, who ran the works and transport portfolio under Governor Seyi Makinde, claims he sacrificed an academic post to serve the administration, yet watched anti-party operatives collect rewards while his loyalty went unacknowledged through appointments or basic party recognition.

The ex-commissioner detailed financing security operations and mobilizing Hausa-speaking voters in Ibadan and Ogbomoso neighborhoods during the general elections and local government polls, particularly highlighting personal risk when safeguarding the Ogbomoso electoral process. His exit statement warns that other members may follow unless leadership addresses internal grievances and reforms how it treats committed party workers. Afonja has not disclosed his political destination.
