Africa needs $30 billion to modernize aviation infrastructure

At the III Financing Summit for Africa’s Infrastructure Development in Luanda, South African official Mataboge highlighted aviation as a key driver of continental integration and economic transformation. Speaking at a high-level session on modernizing African civil aviation infrastructure, he stressed that the success of the Single African Air Transport Market depends on building safe, efficient and modern systems aligned with Agenda 2063 and the African Continental Free Trade Area.

Citing a Continental Aviation Infrastructure Gap Analysis conducted with the African Civil Aviation Commission, International Civil Aviation Organization and the World Bank, Mataboge said Africa requires $25 billion to $30 billion over the next 10 years. Of that, $10 billion is needed for airports and aerodromes and $8 billion for upgrading communication, navigation and weather systems. Passenger traffic is expected to grow from 160 million in 2024 to nearly 500 million by 2050, increasing pressure for investment.

The African Union plans to leverage $10 billion in public funding to draw $20 billion in private and institutional capital. The strategy includes deploying technologies such as Airport Collaborative Decision-Making and System-Wide Information Management, along with renewable energy initiatives at airports, to meet global green standards and attract climate-focused financing. Mataboge said these efforts will position African aviation as a sustainable, competitive asset class that supports continental connectivity and growth.
