Africa unveils first data centre code in Johannesburg to drive green innovation

Africa established its inaugural data center energy standards during a Johannesburg conference held from June 23 to 24. The continent developed these guidelines by adapting European Union efficiency protocols to match local climate and economic conditions. Smart Africa partnered with the African Data Centre Association to oversee this continental initiative. The European Commission's Joint Research Centre provided technical guidance throughout the development process. This framework addresses rising energy demands as African nations expand their digital infrastructure.

Four facilities across English and French-speaking regions will test these new standards starting in summer 2025. Digital Parks Africa, Africa Data Centres, PAIX Data Centres, and Sin Togo agreed to participate in pilot programs. Ten African companies formed a working group to shape technical benchmarks and reporting methods. The pilot results will inform the final framework before its official release. Cape Town will host the formal launch ceremony during November 2025.
