Akran of Badagry dies at 89 after 48-year reign

The Akran of Badagry has passed away following a brief illness. His reign spanned nearly half a century, marking one of the longest traditional rules in Lagos State. He was seen as a stabilizing leader for the ancient coastal town and its surrounding communities.

Before becoming king, he worked as an educator and a journalist. He served with several national publications, rising to an editorial position. This background informed his emphasis on dialogue and inclusive community development.

He also held the permanent vice chairman role in the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs. His service earned him a national honor and an honorary law doctorate. He was widely viewed as a compassionate father figure who promoted unity.

Palace officials confirm traditional burial rites have now commenced. The Lagos State government has not yet released an official statement. Tributes are anticipated from residents and leaders across the region.
