Al-Shabab prison break leaves seven militants dead

Somalia killed all seven al-Shabab militants who attacked a high-security prison in Mogadishu on Saturday evening, the government announced. The attackers disguised themselves as soldiers to infiltrate Godka Jilicow detention center, which holds al-Shabab fighters near the presidential palace. Al-Shabab claimed it freed all Muslim prisoners from the facility, but authorities did not confirm any escapes.

The assault began at approximately 4:40 p.m. local time with a large explosion, followed by gunfire at the facility operated by Somalia's National Intelligence and Security Agency. The government expressed condolences to the families of fallen security personnel without specifying casualty numbers. Al-Shabab has conducted a violent insurgency against the Somali government for nearly two decades as an al-Qaeda affiliate. Hours before the attack, authorities had reopened major roads in the capital after citing improved security conditions.
