Amaechi I Lied About Being Igbo to Protest

Former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi spoke about his ethnic identity during a television interview. He said he comes from the Ikwerre people of Rivers State. Amaechi explained that he sometimes calls himself Igbo for political reasons. He wanted to show support for Southeast Nigeria when people treated them badly. The former governor used this claim as a way to protest unfair treatment.

Amaechi wore traditional Igbo clothing like the Tiger head cloth and red cap. He did this to draw attention to problems facing Igbo communities. The politician said most Ikwerre people do not consider themselves Igbo. He belongs to a small group that connects with Igbo identity. Amaechi made his statement to encourage Nigerians to fix issues affecting the Southeast.

During a 2015 campaign event, Amaechi told supporters he was a true Igbo man. He compared himself to former President Jonathan who has an Igbo-sounding name but cannot speak the language. Amaechi used his political position to highlight ethnic divisions. His actions aimed to make people think about how different groups face discrimination. The former minister turned his identity into a political message about fairness.
