AMD Bails On Samsung Foundry For TSMC US

AMD canceled its 4nm chip orders with Samsung Foundry, likely moving to TSMC instead. The company seems drawn to TSMC's American factories, though the exact reasons remain unclear. This change comes after Samsung struggled with slow performance issues despite offering many products with good production capacity.

AMD once worked closely with Samsung on various chips for servers, computers, and graphics cards as part of its two-supplier plan. The partnership first appeared promising, but has fallen apart, hurting Samsung's attempts to build its reputation in the chip industry. TSMC currently makes 4nm chips at its Arizona plant, where AMD will probably go next.

AMD has already ordered its Venice server chips using TSMC's advanced 2nm process. The company also makes Ryzen 9000 series chips there. AMD received early access to 2nm technology, showing how strong the AMD-TSMC relationship has become recently.

Samsung Foundry faces challenges right now, but might see better days ahead. The company reports interest from NVIDIA for its 2nm process. Samsung also claims its success rates are improving quickly, keeping it relevant in the market.
