Google dumps Samsung for TSMC as Pixel 10 drama erupts over Tensor G5 chip

Google plans to launch the Pixel 10 series with its new Tensor G5 chip later this year. The company decided to dump Samsung and partner with TSMC instead for making the processor. Samsung had major problems with its 3nm manufacturing process and could not produce enough working chips. A leaked photo shows Samsung actually made a prototype version of the Tensor G5 before Google switched companies. The image has Samsung markings that prove the Korean company was working on the project.

Someone sent the picture to a tech insider who shared it online. The chip has special labels that identify it as Google's upcoming processor for flagship phones. Some people think the photo might show memory chips rather than the actual Tensor G5 processor. The confusion comes from technical codes printed on the component that could mean different things. Google needs to confirm what the image actually shows before anyone knows for sure.

Google executives flew to Taiwan to make a deal with TSMC that could last five years. This means the Pixel 14 series might use TSMC chips exclusively for half a decade. The Tensor G5 will use TSMC's advanced 3nm technology that works better than Samsung's version. Future Tensor G6 chips might jump to an even smaller 2nm process to compete with other phone makers.

Samsung lost Google as a customer but still supplies 5G modems for Pixel phones. The company works hard to fix its manufacturing problems and wants to achieve 70 percent success rates within six months.
