Analyst Thomas Chirwa criticizes HRDC over fuel, power crisis response

An analyst rejected recent criticism from the Human Rights Defenders Coalition, claiming the organization lost legitimacy after alignment with the Malawi Congress Party government during the past five years. Thomas Chirwa responded to statements by HRDC chairman Michael Kaiyatsa that called on authorities to resolve fuel shortages, electricity outages and water supply disruptions affecting citizens.

Chirwa asserted that President Arthur Peter Mutharika addressed the concerns during his parliamentary speech and urged the coalition to review that presentation. He stated the group should apologize to citizens for contributing to current problems before advocating for solutions.

The organization once served as a governance watchdog but has faced accusations of abandoning its independent stance. Government officials have not issued a formal response to the coalition's demands.
