ANCYL cites nepotism as Masilela decries youth joblessness

African National Congress Youth League Treasurer General Zwelo Masilela addressed unemployment concerns at a Mpumalanga ANC Women's League gathering in Middelburg, emphasizing that joblessness affects millions of young South Africans. Masilela noted that conference attendees and youth league members share the burden of having children without employment opportunities, highlighting unemployment rates exceeding 32 percent nationally and surpassing 45 percent among young people.

The treasurer general criticized nepotism in hiring practices, stating that personal connections often override qualifications when filling positions. Masilela expressed frustration that employers frequently favor relatives and romantic partners over capable ANC supporters, making it easier to hire individuals opposed to the party's objectives than qualified members aligned with its vision.

Masilela warned that such practices undermine efforts toward economic transformation and weaken progress on revolutionary goals, calling for merit-based employment systems that provide equal opportunities regardless of personal relationships.
