An African National Congress Youth League official has urged education authorities to reverse their decision regarding Tumahole Finishing School after learning the institution will permanently close. Babiki Lazarus Dewet sent correspondence dated November 5, 2025, to the Free State education commissioner and the Fezile Dabi District regional director, expressing concern about potential consequences for students seeking academic advancement. The national executive committee member warned that the closure could increase student attrition and create tension among residents who rely on the program.
Dewet emphasized the school's success in helping individuals complete matriculation requirements after facing obstacles such as modularization and other challenges. Located in Tumahole township near Parys, the facility achieved an 88.9 percent pass rate among similar provincial institutions in 2023. The program serves adult learners and younger students through the national Second Chance Matric Support Programme by offering flexible schedules for working participants.
The youth leader questioned the rationale behind shutting down an institution that has assisted thousands across the region and province. He requested a swift administrative review of the closure plan to maintain confidence in community partnerships and educational access.
