Annet Anita Among petitions EC to gazette her as an unopposed candidate

Parliament Speaker Annet Anita Among formally requested election authorities on Wednesday to certify her unopposed parliamentary candidacy for the 2026 elections. She joined several colleagues seeking an official declaration after no challengers emerged during October nominations. Uganda's electoral law permits such certification when only one valid candidate registers per constituency.

The request coincides with legal challenges to unopposed declarations, including a petition contesting Among's status in Bukedea District. Electoral Commission spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi confirmed officials would publish unopposed winners before January 15 voting. Nationwide nominations produced 2,711 candidates competing for 519 parliamentary positions. Campaign activities commence on November 10 while electoral tribunals review disputed nominations. Among and fellow legislators submitted their petition through legal representatives last week.
