Apple C1X in iPhone Air spanks Qualcomm, battery flexes

Apple launched the C1X 5G modem within the iPhone Air during its recent keynote presentation. The technology company claims this custom baseband chip surpasses Qualcomm's Snapdragon X75 in speed while consuming 30 percent less energy. Ben Bajarin from Creative Strategies research firm acknowledges that Qualcomm's solutions deliver superior raw performance capabilities. However, he confirms that Apple's C1X provides unmatched battery efficiency for users prioritizing device longevity. The iPhone Air achieves 27 hours of video playback through this power-optimized design.

The C1X operates exclusively on sub-6GHz networks and cannot access mmWave 5G frequencies. Apple pairs this modem with the N1 wireless networking chip to maximize battery performance. Bajarin expects Qualcomm to remain Apple's primary modem supplier for several years despite this development. Apple's licensing agreement with Qualcomm terminates in March 2027, potentially marking the end of their partnership. The company aims to integrate 5G, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth components into a single chip package for enhanced efficiency.
