Apple plans to create a folding iPhone that will compete with Samsung and Google devices. Industry expert Ming-Chi Kuo says Apple supplier Foxconn will start working on the project during late 2025. The company still needs to decide on many parts and features before moving forward. Apple wants to solve the crease problem that affects all current folding phones on the market.
Samsung will make special displays for Apple that might not have visible creases when folded. The company plans to build enough factories to make 7 to 8 million screens each year starting in 2026. Apple also needs to finish designing the metal hinge that connects the two screen halves together. The hinge will use strong materials like stainless steel and titanium to last longer.
Foxconn will begin building the phones during the second half of 2026 after finishing the design work. The folding iPhone will have a large 7.8-inch screen inside and a smaller 5.5-inch screen outside. When opened flat, the phone will measure just 4.5 millimeters thick but will be 9.5 millimeters thick when closed. Apple takes extra time developing this phone because they want to make it better than existing folding devices.
