Apple's new AirPods Pro 3 are a $249 entry fee for a $19 cable

Apple eliminates charging cables from AirPods Pro 3 packaging, following patterns established with iPhone accessory removal. The company continues this strategy after gradually eliminating wired earphones and power adapters from product bundles. AirPods Pro 2 models still contain USB-C charging cables, but the newer generation abandons this practice entirely. Apple claims environmental sustainability motivates these decisions, though revenue generation appears central to the strategy.

The technology giant shipped approximately 66 million AirPods units during 2024, creating substantial profit opportunities through separate accessory sales. Customers purchasing USB-C cables at $19 each could generate $1.254 billion in additional revenue for Apple. Pre-orders for AirPods Pro 3 begin at $249 through Amazon, while discounted AirPods Pro 2 models retail for $199. Most consumers already own USB-C accessories compatible with the wireless earbuds, reducing their dependency on Apple cable purchases.
