Armed Herders Invade Tsavo East National Park

A sad thing happened in a national park in Kenya on Sunday. Some people who take care of animals called herders, went into the park when they weren't supposed to. They had weapons with them.

The herders ran into some officers from the Kenya Wildlife Service or KWS. The officers were there to keep the park safe.

The herders and officers got into a fight. The herders used poisoned arrows and moved scarily towards the officers.

Sadly, one of the herders died during the fight. A poisoned arrow almost hit a KWS officer. It hit their gun instead.

KWS felt bad about what happened and said they were sorry to the family of the herder who died. KWS and the herders' community usually get along well, but this fight was not normal.

KWS told the police in two different counties about the fight. They sent people to investigate, and KWS is helping with this.

KWS said there have been more problems lately near one side of the park. They think some political leaders are telling the community to bring their animals into the park. The leaders are making promises about land that aren't true.

In November, there was more trouble. A police station was burned down, and a KWS base inside the park had to be moved.

Even with these difficult times, KWS is trying to make peace. They are talking with the community and meeting with elders and leaders, and things are starting to get better in some places.

KWS is also helping the community in other ways. They dug a well so people could have water, and they built classrooms so kids could learn.

KWS said that entering national parks when you're not supposed to is against the law. They don't like that leaders are making the community do this, and they think it leads to a sad fight.

KWS wants everyone to respect the parks and work together to keep the animals, park workers, and people who live nearby safe.

KWS said they will keep working to protect Kenya's animals. They also want to get along with the communities that live next to the parks.
