Army not a pawn in Zanu PF power fight

Chris Mutsvangwa from Zanu-PF says nobody should use the army for their grab for power. The party faces growing fights between teams that back President Emmerson Mnangagwa or Vice President Constantino Chiwenga. War veterans led a national stay-home protest Monday against Mnangagwa's reported plans to stay longer than his term allows.

Mnangagwa took charge after the military helped him in 2017, and then he won elections that many people questioned. He battles Chiwenga for control as the VP sees his power shrink because Mnangagwa makes smart moves to run the security forces. Some fear Chiwenga might ask soldiers to help kick Mnangagwa out, just as Blessed Geza and other war veterans want.

Mutsvangwa shot down these ideas firmly. He said the army belongs to everyone, not just one person, and nobody should grab power through it. Mnangagwa acted fast to protect himself by removing Lieutenant-General Anselem Sanyatwe, who liked Chiwenga, from leading the army and replacing him with Lieutenant-General Emmanuel Matatu.

General Philip Valerio Sibanda still commands all defense forces, while Mnangagwa changes leaders in police and spy agencies. He tightens his grip on security, as experts see these steps as ways to block Chiwenga's reach. The fight inside Zanu-PF keeps heating up, with Mnangagwa's team standing firm against unhappy members. Chiwenga's supporters, including war veterans, push hard for new leadership at the top of Zimbabwe's government.
