Army officers face tribunal over torture and disappearances

Bangladesh's war crimes tribunal has scheduled hearings for early next month on two cases involving enforced disappearances and torture allegedly committed by military interrogation units under the previous administration. Former premier Sheikh Hasina and multiple current and former armed forces personnel face charges related to operations conducted by specialized detention facilities.

Thirteen detained officers spanning ranks from lieutenant colonel to major general have requested remote participation rather than physical court appearances. Their legal representatives filed the virtual hearing petition with tribunal officials. The accused served in various elite units.

Authorities deployed substantial security forces from police, paramilitary border guards, and rapid action battalions around the judicial complex, anticipating the defendants' scheduled production before magistrates.
