Ashwin packs bags for Sydney Thunder, BBL braces for desi spin fest

Sydney Thunder prepares to welcome Ravichandran Ashwin as their newest recruit for the Big Bash League season. The 39-year-old spinner becomes the tournament's first major Indian signing after retiring from international cricket and the Indian Premier League. Cricket Australia's Todd Greenberg reached out to assess Ashwin's interest in Australian domestic competition. The veteran player recently entered the ILT20 auction with a base price of USD 120,000, marking the highest amount for any participant. Thunder supporters will see him team up with David Warner and Sam Konstas when he arrives in January.

Ashwin requires special permission from Cricket Australia since he missed the overseas player draft registration deadline. His international career concluded with 765 wickets across 287 matches after the Brisbane Test last December. The off-spinner holds fifth place among IPL's all-time leading wicket-takers with 187 dismissals at an average of 30.22. He also committed to representing India at the Hong Kong Sixes tournament under Dinesh Karthik's leadership.
