AU, EU renew health partnership at Pretoria summit

At the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Health Sciences, delegates from the African Union and European Union met on November 5, 2025, for a high-level steering session renewing a 25-year health partnership. About 30 representatives from 15 nations, four regional bodies and 11 continental institutions aligned on equity, security and resilience ahead of the G20 health ministers meeting and the AU-EU summit in Luanda. Participants aimed to shape sustainable, country-led solutions for outbreaks such as mpox and drive universal health coverage across Africa.

South Africa’s Ministry of Health hosted the session in collaboration with the African Union Commission, Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, the European Commission and the Belgian government. Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi opened the meeting by highlighting Africa’s leadership in health financing as South Africa chairs the G20. Delegates reviewed achievements such as vaccine donations and technology transfers and underscored the role of the mRNA technology transfer hub in regional production.

Participants organized discussions around five priority areas that span vaccine and medicine manufacturing and access, sexual and reproductive health and rights, sustainable health security under a One Health framework, digital health for stronger systems and support for public health institutes. Examples cited involve the donation of mpox doses through Team Europe and Ghana’s introduction of a malaria treatment for infants. Officials said joint action has bolstered regulatory systems, accelerated clinical research and positioned Africa as a leader in global health architecture.
