AU IGAD Chiefs Put Kiir on the Spot in Juba

African Union leader Mahmoud Ali Youssouf traveled to Juba Monday with IGAD deputy chief Mohammed Abdi Were for peace talks. They met with President Salva Kiir, Foreign Minister Monday Semaya Kumba, cabinet officials, and members of the High-Level Committee. The team asked Kiir to speed up the slow peace process that started seven years ago but has seen little progress.

The 2018 peace deal created a national unity government that should have written a constitution and held elections. Despite promises of change, nothing has happened since the agreement was signed. The visiting officials urged everyone to keep talking about peace and help the country move forward. Both groups want South Sudan to finish its transition plan and hold fair elections soon. They believe the country needs healing through national talks that bring all sides together.
