Azmiri Hossain arrested for cutting 50 trees in Cumilla

Authorities in Cumilla have detained a resident accused of destroying dozens of trees planted alongside a major thoroughfare connecting the capital with Chattogram. Azmiri Hossain faces charges after allegedly removing more than 50 Bakul specimens and additional vegetation from a 500-meter section near Betlatoli to clear land for growing crops.

The Roads and Highways Department initiated legal proceedings following the discovery of the environmental damage, which included completely uprooted specimens, partially severed trunks, and burned vegetation. Law enforcement officer Mohammad Selim confirmed the arrest following the complaint filed with the Sadar Dakshin station.

The destroyed greenery had been established following the expansion of the corridor into a four-lane configuration years earlier, serving both aesthetic and protective functions for travelers.
