Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has alleged a government plan to demolish multiple longstanding Nairobi estates for an affordable housing initiative. He stated that hundreds of families in areas including Makongeni, Jericho, and Maringo face displacement. Owino criticized the proposed compensation of 150,000 shillings per household as insufficient, questioning how such an amount could support families.
He further challenged the plan to relocate residents to new housing units, noting that their cost, around two million shillings, is unaffordable for most current occupants. The MP demanded that authorities provide new homes and titles to residents before any demolition occurs. He urged residents to defend their property rights and threatened legal action to halt the process, arguing that addressing unemployment and the high cost of living should be a greater priority.
