Banana sacks bust—31.5kg mbanje found on night patrol

A traffic stop on the Birchenough Bridge road near Mt Selinda turned up a huge drug haul. Police in Manicaland found over thirty-one kilograms of mbanje hidden inside banana sacks on a bus. Provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka said the cannabis has a street value of around three thousand five hundred dollars. The suspected owner of the drugs ran away after officers discovered it.

Chipinge Traffic officers were doing a normal patrol when they stopped the Inter Africa bus. They smelled a strong odor coming from the luggage compartment. A search revealed four sacks that seemed full of bananas. Officers looked inside and found packages of cannabis concealed within the fruit. The driver and conductor claimed they did not know who owned the luggage. During the inspection, an unidentified man got off the bus and escaped into the night.

Chinyoka warned traffickers that police are always watching. He praised the alertness of the officers involved. The recovered drugs were taken to a local traffic office for weighing and processing. Authorities are following leads and ask the public for any helpful information. They believe the man who fled is connected to the shipment and expect to make arrests.
