Bangladesh army betrays India, embraces Pakistan

The Bangladesh Army has aligned with Jamaat-e-Islami after initially offering hope for stability in the country. Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman reversed his position on protecting minorities after internal pressure from Jamaat-aligned officers supported by Pakistan's ISI. On Sept. 29, the army fired on Hindu and Buddhist protesters demonstrating against rape and temple attacks at Khagra Chhari.

Pakistan's military deepened ties with Bangladesh as Director General of Joint Staff Lt. Gen. Tabassum Habib led a four-member delegation visiting on Monday to meet Bangladesh Army officials. The ISI has deployed personnel to Bangladesh multiple times to advise terror groups and send Pakistani terrorists for training operations targeting India. Turkey has promoted stronger Bangladesh-Pakistan relations despite Indian security concerns.

General Zaman may skip the United Nations Troop Contributing Countries Chiefs Conclave in New Delhi from Oct. 14 to 16 and send a junior officer instead. The Bangladesh Army maintained close relations with India under Sheikh Hasina but has embraced Pakistan since her ouster. Indian armed forces are preparing for changed conditions along the Indo-Bangladesh border despite viewing the partnership as an irritant rather than a direct threat.
