Bar Boss Demands Pay Boost and Legal Overhaul

The leader of The Gambia's lawyers, Neneh MC Cham, spoke at a big meeting yesterday. She wants a new law that will help judges do their jobs better. This law would make sure judges receive enough money. She thinks this money will help them make fair decisions without being scared of anyone.

The law makers talked about this idea last September. Many people didn't like it at first, which made the lawmakers stop and think more. Ms Cham said the judges need to feel safe when they work. She asked people to start looking at old laws again and fix them.

Ms Cham talked about some rules that stop people from saying what they think. The highest court said these rules were wrong in May 2018. The rules went against what The Gambia's big law book says about freedom. But these bad rules still exist in the law books. Ms Cham wants to know what happened to a new set of rules they wrote in 2019.

She thinks people should tell the government when things need to change. This helps make things work better for everyone, especially when it comes to laws and fairness. Ms Cham felt happy that other West African leaders said yes to creating a special court. This court will look at people who did bad things a long time ago.

Ms Cham wants the government to make this special court quickly. She believes this will bring peace to The Gambia. When bad people answer for what they did wrong, everyone can feel better and start to be friends again.
