BCCI swaps World Cup party for Zubeen Garg tunes

The Board of Control for Cricket in India announces plans to honor deceased Assamese music legend Zubeen Garg during the ICC Women's ODI World Cup 2025 opening ceremony on September 30. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia revealed that Guwahati will host this historic first World Cup match for Assam when India faces Sri Lanka. The board partnered with Assam Cricket Association to organize the tribute event for the beloved artist who passed away September 19 in Singapore. Officials modified their original grand celebration plans to create a respectful 40-minute musical homage instead.

Renowned performers Papon, Joy Barua, Shreya Ghoshal, and the Shillong Choir will participate in the memorial tribute. Stadium officials expect the 40,000-capacity venue to reach full attendance given India's participation on opening day. Enhanced security protocols and traffic management systems address the anticipated crowds during Durga Puja's Mahashtami celebration. The tournament features matches across four Indian cities and Colombo, with India and Sri Lanka serving as co-hosts.
