Beloved TV Star Valerie Mahaffey Dead at 71

Emmy winner Valerie Mahaffey passed away Friday at age 71 after fighting cancer. Her family told news outlets she died at her California home. The actress earned fame through roles on Desperate Housewives and Young Sheldon. Her husband Joseph Kell said America lost a beloved performer. Their daughter Alice posted on social media about losing her mother.

Mahaffey won her primetime Emmy award back during 1992 for Northern Exposure. She also earned a daytime Emmy earlier for her work on The Doctors soap opera. The performer appeared on dozens of TV shows across five decades. Her movie credits featured Sully and Seabiscuit among others. She received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for French Exit during 2020.

Born to parents from Canada and America, Mahaffey grew up overseas before moving to Texas as a teenager. She started acting professionally during 1977 with Tell Me My Name. Television audiences knew her from programs like ER and Glee. Desperate Housewives fans remember her character Alma Hodge across eight episodes. Young Sheldon viewers watched her play teacher Victoria MacElroy on the popular comedy series.
