Besigye Jailed Again in Treason Showdown

The court sent Dr. Kizza Besigye back to prison until May 21. He appeared with fellow prisoner Hajji Obeid Lutale as guards watched closely. Their lawyers, Martha Karua from Kenya, Kampala Mayor Erias Lukwago, and attorney Eron Kiiza, faced government lawyers in a full courtroom. Both sides blamed each other for trial delays. The defense team said they filed papers with the High Court, waiting for answers.

Richard Birivumbuka, the state lawyer, came under attack from defense attorneys who claimed he talks but shows no proof. The government claims Besigye, Lutale, and others planned to overthrow Uganda between 2003 and November 2024. They say the group met in Geneva, Athens, Nairobi, and Kampala for these plans. Officials argue the accused did more than talk about their ideas. The judge will decide what happens next when the court meets again.
