Blantyre joins Lilongwe and Mangochi in protests calling for MEC officials' resignation

People across Malawi want two election officials to quit their jobs. The protests started in Lilongwe but spread to other cities like Blantyre and Mangochi. All three cities plan to march on June 26th to demand changes at the election commission.

Citizens for Credible Elections leads the movement against Justice Annabel Mtalimanja and Andrew Mpesi. The group says these officials refuse to let outside experts check the voting computer system. They also complain about the electronic voting machines that will be used in September elections.

Asabuni Phiri runs the Blantyre chapter and confirmed his city will join the demonstrations. Protesters will meet at Chichiri Upper stadium and walk to the election office. They plan to give officials a letter explaining their demands.

The organizers told Blantyre District Council about their peaceful march. They reminded government workers that protesting is allowed under the constitution. The letter was meant to help officials prepare for the event rather than ask permission.

Election problems worry many people before the September vote. The protesters believe new leadership would make the voting process more honest and fair.
