BNP official flees home for 10 years, now returns

Rashedul Haque will return to Bangladesh on Sunday after spending nearly a decade abroad as the Bangladesh Nationalist Party works to expand its diplomatic presence. The international affairs secretary is expected to land at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 11 a.m., and Shayrul Kabir Khan from the BNP Media Cell confirmed the arrival. Haque moved to Australia after leaving his position with the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal at Dhaka University, and he rose through party ranks from committee member in 2019 to his current post in 2024.

Australian lawmakers passed a motion calling for new elections in Bangladesh after Haque built relationships with parliament members from both chambers. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese raised concerns about the Jan. 7 vote, and 43 senators later demanded the disbanding of the Rapid Action Battalion. Haque serves as special assistant for foreign affairs to the acting chairman, Tarique Rahman.
