BNP Secretary General Calls for End to Torture and Custodial Deaths on International Day Against Torture

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir demanded an end to torture and deaths during police custody. He made these comments Tuesday before the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. Fakhrul offered sympathy to oppressed people across Bangladesh and around the world. The opposition leader said tyrannical rulers have caused suffering for many years. He stated that dictators destroy peace and democracy through cruel actions.

Fakhrul described the July-August mass uprising where thousands of students and citizens died. He blamed the former government for using harsh tactics against protesters. The BNP official said the previous administration killed and disappeared many people over 16 years. He accused the Awami League of controlling all institutions and crushing free speech. Media outlets faced threats and pro-democracy activists suffered torture under that rule.

The opposition leader highlighted BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia's imprisonment. He said authorities jailed the former prime minister through false charges. Officials denied her proper medical care during her detention. Fakhrul called this treatment an example of extreme state oppression. He demanded fair compensation and rehabilitation for all torture victims and their families.
